Let's say that you own a phone company. You provide the telephone poles. You provide the wiring. You provide the switching stations. You provide the telephone. You provide in-house maintenance. You print the PHONE BOOK.
Now, let's say that you are a VOIP provider. You provide the software. You provide the connection to the phone system… YOU MAKE THE MONEY on the telephone company's work. You are cheaper and you are KICKING BUTT on the telephone company's former success.
BUT, the VOIP company can only sell to people that already have high speed internet. VOIP companies do not maintain any wires or telephones. So only smart people can use your service. Some VOIP companies provide the Telephone adapter kit, like Vonage, so the have to charge more than Skype.
I have had Vonage now for 2 years… it is totally awesome.
I hate to tell you, but there is no "best" ……there all have there ups and downs…..that's the nature of VoIP…I have been very happy with mine….I feel almost embarrassed to say, but it took me about a week of working together with my ISP laying a totally separate line just for my phone, all the way from the curb of the house….its was free…if you go online voip forum, you will see 50% love it, and the rest hate it!! sometimes I wonder if the voip companies just want you to sign you up, so they can charge ppl the high disconnection fees!!! Skype is free from computer to computer, since it exclusively uses internet to communicate. To make or receive calls from the telephone network will cost some, since there is a cost to that network connection.
Vonage, exclusively makes calls over the public telephone network, although could have "Deals" for Vonage to Vonage calls.
Vonage also doesn't need the computer on to use, nor does it require a specific sort of computer or OS.
Magic Jack, worth a mention, is more like Vonage, but relies on your computer to be on and running to make or receive calls.
POTS service (Plain old telephone service) has voice frequency limitations. Only the frequencies from 200 to 3000 hz are passed and with pots, data is only guaranteed to a speed of 1200 hz. I do not know what the actual specification for Viop are, however i will bet that they far exceed that of pots. I do know that with Vonage, you can select your bandwidth from 50K to 100K and it sounds great. Far better than pots. By the way, pots by telecom definition does not support tone signalling (DTMF/Touchtone).

so far they have a great service
and whats best is the unlimited long distance per month within north America specially when traveling

Vonage was an advantage as internet is readily available almost every where you go now around the globe
so far it is the best i went to Europe,japan and middle east between June 2005 and January 2006 n used the box while traveling n it works good(depending on connection speed) you would still save so much on phone bills whether you use it for business or pleasure.
what i like about the service is when the Internet gets disconnected or is down the phone calls will be forwarded to another phone(cellphone) and you can still see who called you on-line if you missed a few calls on your cell or the number didnot show up on your phone because you were roaming in another Country/Province/State
VOIP is good but impractical if there is a power outage. With AT&t service if there is a power outage you still have service. With VOIP you require power to your Internet Connection and your Computer. I would consider VOIP as a second line and keep your AT&T Land Line as your primary line. Just my opinion.
Companies like Vonage and other VOIPs are ok, but many have hidden fees. It is also limited in what it can do. Additionally, with magic jack if you don't have a computer it won't work. A company to check out is "Momentum Plus". It has plans that start as low as $4.95 a month. There are no connection fees, no hidden fees and no taxes. The phones can also be used anywhere in the world. Many of the phones do not require the use of a computer. You don't have to buy a high priced adapter. Momentum Plus also gives you an opportunity to be a subscriber and a representative.

Being a representative allows you to earn financial benefits and share in the company profits. The others companies are more than happy to take your hard earned money, spend it on advertising and give it to their stock holders. If you are going to have to pay a monthly fee anyway, why not get something financially in return.
I have 2 lines through Sun Rocket. Cheap ($200.00 a year per line) but the customer service is one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a company that expects your money. Had some problems when it was first hooked up but has done fine now that the bugs have worked out. My biggest complaint is that they sold me a line for a fax machine. After working on almost every day for three weeks I still cannot receive or send a fax on this line.
My best advice is if you get it, be sure you have a land line and use the Vo1P as a backup.
