Define your Needs When Shopping for VOIP Services

After all the research you have finally gotten around to doing on the topic of VOIP and VOIP services, you are just about ready to take the plunge. Making the decision to go with VOIP, however, is only half the battle. There are a truckload of VOIP providers out there, each one telling you that their service is the best one since sliced bread, so how do you make an intelligent and informed decision about which one to go with?

The first thing you need to realize is that not all VOIP services are created equally. One of the limiting factors is your high-speed Internet connection, since that will be used for your home VOIP to make and receive calls. VOIP will work reliably with DSL or cable (or better), but is not recommended if all you have is a satellite high-speed Internet connection, and VOIP is not recommended if you have access only to a wireless connection.

The vast majority of problems with VOIP from virtually any VOIP provider comes down to a lack of a reliable high-speed Internet connection. Your Internet provider may CLAIM you are getting reliable service and a fast connection, but if you are having trouble getting something as simple as VOIP to work on it, then they are blowing smoke at you and it may be time to look for another Internet provider. In terms of the Internet connection part of VOIP, that is just about as simple as things will ever get, and your Internet provider should be able to handle it. If they cannot, they may have purposely blocked it because they want to sell you VOIP services themselves … at twice the price!

Now you need to determine what VOIP features you need. Almost all the VOIP providers and VOIP plans provider caller ID, voicemail, and call waiting, so let’s see what else needs to be considered, and this is where things start to differ and get quite interesting.

Almost all of them offer unlimited long distance calling in the continental US. But do you call Canada a lot, or make frequent calls to Puerto Rico? If so, there are VOIP providers who include Canada and Puerto Rico in their unlimited calling plans.

Do you have friends, perhaps your parents or a sibling that you talk to a lot but they do not have VOIP? Is it the case where they call you frequently? You may wish to consider a plan that includes a virtual number or where you can get a virtual number cheaply. A virtual number is a phone number in that city. Say you live in Detroit so you of course have a Detroit phone number on your VOIP phone. Say you talk to your sister a lot in Houston who does not have a VOIP phone. You can get a Houston phone number in addition to your Detroit phone number, so now your sister can make a LOCAL call to your Houston number, and when she does, your VOIP phone at your home in Detroit will ring so it doesn’t cost her anything! Is that cool or what?

Determine your needs and then start comparing VOIP features to see which VOIP provider offers the most bang for the bucks, based on what you need. Don’t pay extra for VOIP services that you will only use once in a blue moon.

POTS service (Plain old telephone service) has voice frequency limitations. Only the frequencies from 200 to 3000 hz are passed and with pots, data is only guaranteed to a speed of 1200 hz. I do not know what the actual specification for Viop are, however i will bet that they far exceed that of pots. I do know that with Vonage, you can select your bandwidth from 50K to 100K and it sounds great. Far better than pots. By the way, pots by telecom definition does not support tone signalling (DTMF/Touchtone).

The cost effectiveness of VOIP service cannot really be argued. With a traditional phone line from the local telephone company, you are paying about $25 a month just for dial tone. Now compare that to VOIP service, where for less than that, you also get unlimited long distance, voice mail, caller ID, and perhaps other features as well. Not to mention that as long as you have a broadband internet connection, you can be anywhere in the world and make and receive calls and no additional charge.

When comparing different VOIP service providers, you need to look at the features they offer with the service. Features is another category where VOIP providers come out on top by a wide margin over traditional telephone services. VOIP providers offer many features that regular land line phone companies either charge extra for or are not able to offer at all.

Companies like Vonage and other VOIPs are ok, but many have hidden fees. It is also limited in what it can do. Additionally, with magic jack if you don't have a computer it won't work. A company to check out is "Momentum Plus". It has plans that start as low as $4.95 a month. There are no connection fees, no hidden fees and no taxes. The phones can also be used anywhere in the world. Many of the phones do not require the use of a computer. You don't have to buy a high priced adapter. Momentum Plus also gives you an opportunity to be a subscriber and a representative.

Being a representative allows you to earn financial benefits and share in the company profits. The others companies are more than happy to take your hard earned money, spend it on advertising and give it to their stock holders. If you are going to have to pay a monthly fee anyway, why not get something financially in return.

I hate to tell you, but there is no "best" ……there all have there ups and downs…..that's the nature of VoIP…I have been very happy with mine….I feel almost embarrassed to say, but it took me about a week of working together with my ISP laying a totally separate line just for my phone, all the way from the curb of the house….its was free…if you go online voip forum, you will see 50% love it, and the rest hate it!! sometimes I wonder if the voip companies just want you to sign you up, so they can charge ppl the high disconnection fees!!! I got Packet8…

Skype is free from computer to computer, since it exclusively uses internet to communicate. To make or receive calls from the telephone network will cost some, since there is a cost to that network connection.

Vonage, exclusively makes calls over the public telephone network, although could have "Deals" for Vonage to Vonage calls.
Vonage also doesn't need the computer on to use, nor does it require a specific sort of computer or OS.

Magic Jack, worth a mention, is more like Vonage, but relies on your computer to be on and running to make or receive calls.

why dont you take a look at MagicJack!!!

There are many factors that determine voice call quality when using VoIP services. The service provider is just one factor. Your VoIP adapter (ATA) has some influence on the calls. The CODEC used to encode the calls plays some roll. For highest call quality, VoIP should always be using G.711u Codec. A stable and good quality HighSpeed Internet connection is also required.
But, because VoIP calls travel over the public Internet, there is never a guarantee of good service. But, generally speaking, VoIP can provide good quality calls if properly implemented.
